I Patterson sono brutta gente… Butch oggi, per tutti, è un uomo di legge… lo sceriffo di Roodville. Ma ieri? Cos’era, chi era prima di essere nominato Sceriffo dal Sig. Monsanto? Come si guadagnava da vivere, prima di diventare la più grande truffa che il popolo di quel paese potesse immaginare? Lo Sceriffo Patterson non è solo un corrotto, che esegue la legge del padrone, così come lui comanda… è una menzogna in carne, ossa e sangue, un inganno. Con suo fratello, Nelson Patterson, era a capo di una banda di codardi malviventi che ha seminato morte e terrore, ammazzando uomini, donne e bambini, come cani. Non c’era banca o diligenza che potesse sfuggire alle loro malazioni. “Eravamo tanti, sporchi, dentro e fuori, prima che il mio Signore conquistasse il paese… oggi sono la legge, la legge del più forte.”
